The Las Vegas Aces bagged their second straight championship last season at the expense of the New York Liberty. On Sunday, the Liberty made sure to make amends as they took down the two-time defending champs in Game 4 of their second-round matchup to book their spot in the WNBA Finals.
This was a big win not only for the Liberty but for their fans as well. So much so that some of them could not help but bring out the receipts on the Aces now that New York has ended their campaign.
Las Vegas star Kelsey Plum’s controversial shot at the Liberty from last year’s finals has now resurfaced thanks to a trending thread on X (formerly Twitter). In it, Plum criticized New York right after the Aces had clinched the championship.
“I think we knew we hadn’t played our best basketball,” Plum said in Oct. 2023, via CBS Sports. “We also knew that, as much as they’re a team, they’re not a team, if that makes sense. They’re really good individual players, but they don’t care about each other. And you can tell in those moments. They revert back to individual basketball.”
Liberty star Jonquel Jones responded to Plum’s take by slamming the Aces guard and her “classless” comments — a statement that is now making its rounds again on social media after Sunday’s contest.
“She’s not in our locker room,” Jones said last year. “She doesn’t know what goes on in our locker rooms and our huddles. I think it’s easy to kick people when they’re down and you’re up.
“Honestly, to me, it felt kind of classless. You already won a championship, you get to celebrate with your teammates, you get to talk about things that your team did to be successful, and you choose to essentially just s— on somebody else and their team and what they’ve built all year. Yeah, for me, I don’t care anything for it, to be honest.”
This new post is now trending on social media. As of writing, it has gotten over 150,000 views since it was posted two hours ago.
Jones and the Liberty came into this series with a lot of motivation, and they made sure that they were going to get the last laugh.
New York now awaits the winner of the other semifinal series after the Connecticut Sun secured a 92-82 victory over the Minnesota Lynx to force a winner-take-all Game 5 on Tuesday.
Game 1 of the finals is scheduled on Wednesday as the Liberty look to bag their first-ever WNBA championship. The Aces, on the other hand, are headed home after their failed title defense.
