The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, but All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce didn’t play a huge role in that result.

Kelce, a three-time Super Bowl champion, had just one reception for five yards in Week 2. It was the worst performance NFL fans have seen from him in a long, long time. After all, his streak of catching at least three passes in 114 straight games came to an end.

When asked about Kelce’s performance, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said the lack of production was due to all the attention he was receiving from Cincinnati’s defense.

“They were doing a great job of just having two people for him, pretty much the entire game,” Mahomes said after the game. “That’s why you have guys like Rashee [Rice] and [Xavier] Worthy. If you look at the first touchdown, I’m actually looking to Trav, and the backside safety goes all the way across the field to help guard Travis and you throw the ball down the sideline to Rashee. That’s kind of been what they are doing.”

NFL fans have a different idea as to why Kelce is struggling to put up Pro Bowl numbers this season. They believe he’s saving his best moments for the playoffs.

“He’s gonna be bad all year and then convert multiple key third downs in the playoffs,” an NFL fan tweeted. “I’m already mad about it.”

This theory blew up on X, formerly known as Twitter, receiving over two million views.

Judging by the responses to this social media post, most NFL fans agree with this prediction.

“I think he’s in his late Tim Duncan years where they essentially just save him for the only games that matter for them which is the playoffs,” one fan commented.

“That’s the Chiefs way now,” a social media user wrote. “Cruise through the regular season and flip a switch in the playoffs.”
