Indiana Fever star Kelsey Mitchell was recently questioned about a potential “disconnect” with rookie Caitlin Clark during the WNBA playoffs.
The Fever lost to the Connecticut Sun in Game 1, 93-69. Mitchell and Clark both struggled with shooting in the matchup.
While a reporter asked if it was the result of a “disconnect” between Mitchell and Clark, the league veteran explained that it was likely due to Indiana’s lack of experience.
Mitchell said that there was a disconnect throughout the entire team, but she views Wednesday’s game against the Sun as a blank slate.
“I don’t think there’s a disconnect. I think that we were learning what it was like to play in a playoff game. I just think that’s the reality. There’s no way around that. ‘ve never been here. She’s never been here. I think most of us have never been here. You get to see a disconnection throughout the course of our organization.”
Mitchell finished the Game 1 loss to the Sun with a team-high 21 points. Despite leading the Fever in scoring, the WNBA veteran struggled to find an offensive rhythm, shooting 2-of-10 from three-point range and 9-of-20 from the field.
Clark, who was playing in her first WNBA playoff game as a rookie, recorded 11 points, eight assists and four rebounds. The Fever star also struggled to find the bottom of the net on a consistent basis, shooting 2-of-13 from three and 4-of-17 from the field.
Clark and Mitchell will have a chance to bounce back on Wednesday in Connecticut at 7:30 p.m. ET. While both players struggled in Game 1, Mitchell explains that they’re bound to learn from their mistakes and improve in a “must-win” Game 2.
If the Fever can extend the best-of-three series, the matchup (Game 3 )will be played in Indiana.
The winner of the first-round series will play the winner of the Minnesota Lynx versus Phoenix Mercury matchup in the second round.
