The Kansas City Chiefs’ title retention tour has been a success so far.

They are the only unbeaten team in the AFC after Week 5. They are coming off a huge win over the New Orleans Saints, 26-13, and will look to maintain their immaculate record when they take on the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

The Chiefs have remained on top of the heap despite losing wide receiver Rashee Rice to a knee injury and tight end Travis Kelce still trying to find his rhythm.

With Rice likely to miss the rest of the season, Chiefs coach Andy Reid will have to lean on other less-heralded players to help them stay on course.

One possible guy is guard Trey Smith. He has been doing his part for the Chiefs since being drafted in the sixth round in the 2021 NFL draft. He’s been a key piece in their back-to-back Super Bowl wins.

Playing in the final year of his rookie contract, Smith is “most likely” to get a lucrative extension in the coming months, according to ESPN’s Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler.

“Kansas City extended center Creed Humphrey right before the season and there was some thought at the time his 2021 draft classmate Smith wouldn’t be far behind,” said Graziano.

Humphrey, who was picked by the Chiefs in the second round, signed a four-year extension worth $72 million in August 2024.

“Love the Smith answer,” echoed Fowler. “He should be the NFL’s fifth guard to meet or surpass $20 million annually on a new deal.

“The Chiefs would love to extend him at the same time as Humphrey, but they knew that would be far too costly.”

When asked before the season about his contract year, the 25-year-old Smith said he doesn’t “look at that stuff.”
