Tree Paine (born 1971 or 1972) is an American public relations professional. Despite being called “one of the most powerful people in entertainment” by the Wall Street Journal , she maintains a low profile. Paine made her name as Taylor Swift’s publicist a decade ago.

Like Taylor, Paine began her career in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. She has more than 30 years of experience working in record labels, collaborating with many famous artists such as No Doubt, The Wallflowers, Snoop Dogg, Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson.

“There isn’t a public relations professional in New York, Los Angeles or Nashville who wouldn’t jump at the chance to work with someone as talented as Taylor Swift and her management team ,” Paine reportedly said in April, according to the New York Post .

Since then, Paine has been a low-key presence at Taylor’s side at public events. In photos of the singer on the red carpet, Paine often appears in the background, cautiously watching as photographers scramble to take Taylor’s photo, and occasionally jumps to the center to adjust her artist’s dress.

At the premiere of her music documentary The Eras Tour in October 2023, when asked by photographers to pose alone, Taylor replied: “I do what I’m told, if you don’t mind. Okay? You see that red-haired girl? She’s telling me what to do.”

At work, Tree Paine is a strong supporter of Taylor Swift. In her personal life, she is married to businessman Lance Paine, Chairman of international entertainment production company Scott Brothers Global owned by Property Brothers, and has a daughter.

What did Tree Paine do for Taylor Swift?

For Swifties, Paine is their most beloved spokesperson. At the same time, she’s been called the media’s most feared figure by Axios , with unwavering loyalty and a fierce sense of protectiveness toward her artists.

Since Taylor was the only client, Paine was able to focus entirely on enhancing the Fornight singer’s image . According to Business Insider , her duties included media relations, public relations strategy, and even red carpet escorting.

During their 10 years of working together, Paine repeatedly defended Taylor against scandals. She is said to have two social media accounts, Instagram in private mode and X (Twitter) which is public, mainly to correct rumors or accusations about the billionaire singer.

In December 2023, Paine criticized celebrity gossip Instagram account Deuxmoi for spreading rumors that Taylor and her ex-boyfriend, actor Joe Alwyn, secretly got married before breaking up.

“Enough of the fabricated lies about Taylor from Deuxmoi. There was never a marriage or ceremony of any kind. This is insane. It’s time for you to take responsibility for the pain and hurt you cause through posts like this,” Paine wrote on X.

Paine also spoke out to defend Swift in the scandal with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian.

The dispute revolves around Kanye West’s 2016 song Famous , which includes the line: “Why do I feel like me and Taylor can still have sex? I made her famous.”

In an interview with GQ in June 2016, Kim claimed that Taylor approved the lyrics during a phone call with the rapper. Taylor denied this claim.

In March 2020, Kim addressed the topic again on X, in which she accused Taylor of lying through her rep. About an hour after Kim’s post, Paine publicly mocked the reality star for making up stories.

Paine was also there when Swift settled a sexual assault lawsuit against former DJ David Mueller in 2017.

Mueller sued Swift for $3 million, accusing the singer of falsely accusing him of groping her at an event in 2013. Swift countersued him for $1. A jury in Denver, Colorado, eventually ruled in the singer’s favor.

Cameras were not allowed in the courtroom but Paine could be seen outside the courthouse.

Swifties consider Tree Paine a legend

Paine has mostly worked behind the scenes. But over the years, she has built a large fan base of her own among the passionate Swifties.
