Princess Diana might not like Meghan if she were alive

A British royal expert dismissed the idea that Harry and Meghan wanted to change their surname to Princess Diana. He also said that the former Princess of Wales would not have gotten along with her youngest daughter-in-law if she were still alive.

On June 21, the Daily Express reported that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are said to be discussing dropping the British royal family’s Windsor surname to adopt the Spencer surname after their late mother, Princess Diana.

This was revealed by royal author Tom Bower in an interview with GB News . He said that this is a new effort by Harry and Meghan to rebuild their personal brand, especially after the noise of the $20 million contract with Spotify being canceled.

“What’s really interesting about the Sussexes’ name change is that Meghan has decided that her real goal in life is Diana. That’s always been her desire, and that’s always been Harry’s desire. Meghan has gone so far as to suggest that they drop Windsor and go Spencer. That would make her the new Meghan Spencer, the new Diana. They’ve talked about it not just among themselves, but with other people… They’re actively trying to make themselves Harry and Meghan Spencer. He’s also taking his mother’s name. It’s all about ending a relationship. They’re also dropping the Duke and Duchess of Sussex because that’s the only way they can become the new embodiment of Diana,” commented the author of Revenge: Meghan, Harry, and the War Between the Windsors .

While Tom Bower is convinced that changing his surname is the solution to help Harry and Meghan get out of the current crisis, royal biographer Angela Levin is not convinced.

On GB News on June 22, Ms. Levin said that it was just a trick to divert public attention from the noise of ending the contract with Spotify and surrounding stories such as fake interviews or laziness.

Ms Levin pointed out that Meghan had never met Diana, had only visited her grave – mentioned by Harry in Spare , on the 20th anniversary of the former Princess of Wales’ death – so certainly did not have much understanding, nor did she have much emotion towards her mother-in-law.

The author of Harry: A Biography of a Prince even suggested that Diana might not have liked her youngest daughter-in-law because she was a strong supporter of the monarchy and often reminded her two sons to love and continue the family tradition. According to Ms. Levin, Princess Diana “would not have been good enough” for Meghan if she were still alive.

However, Harry does not think so. He compared his wife to his mother in the documentary Harry & Meghan , which aired in December 2022. The red-haired prince praised his wife for having good qualities like his mother, including warmth, compassion and confidence.

Representatives for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not respond to requests for comment on the name change or the experts’ assessments.
