Oprah Winfrey Set Out To Give Meghan And Harry A Platform Not Knowing It Would Become A ‘Bombshell’ Interview

Oprah Winfrey has become a business and media mogul, generating an incredible amount of money. With her name plastered all over her projects, Winfrey has created a successful empire, bringing fans, fame and fortune. She is most known as a celebrated talk show host, as well as an actress, author, producer and philanthropist. She has engaged herself in many projects and organizations over the years, helping build her empire while helping those in need.

Winfrey has reinvented her daytime talk show ”The Oprah Winfrey Show” from time to time, focusing on literature, self-improvement, mindfulness and spirituality as main topics. In 2008, she took another progressive step in her career and launched her own network called the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). Her work has been criticized by some but has been praised and honored by others. In fact, Winfrey was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by then-president Barack Obama in 2013.

As a talk show host, Oprah has interviewed quite a collection of notable stars over the years, and many stars have revealed previously unknown information. Back in 2021, Winfrey sat down with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in what has since become known as a very telling, bombshell interview. The special aired in March of that year and, to this day, has continued to be discussed.

Many people have compared Harry and Meghan’s interview with Winfrey to a very telling interview Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, had done. However, in an interview from September 2022, Winfrey shared that she never planned for her interview with the former working royals to become such a widely known sensation, and she was just as surprised by what Harry and Meghan said as the rest of the world.

Since their interview with Winfrey, Meghan and Harry have worked with the famous talk show host on other endeavors. Although Meghan didn’t work with Winfrey directly, she used her friend’s recommendation for a party planner when putting together her milestone 40th birthday in 2021. Winfrey’s friend and party planner of choice, Colin Cowie, helped the Duchess of Sussex with her low-key birthday extravaganza. As reported by the Daily Star, a source said:

“Megan wants a small gathering. About 65 people are invited, including her closest friends and family. Colin was recommended to her by Oprah who always puts on fabulous parties.”

And in cooperation with Winfrey, Harry and Meghan released a multi-part documentary project for mental health awareness, which was released on May 21, 2021. The documentary special, “The Me You Can’t See,” was executive produced by Winfrey and Harry and features the two discussing emotional well-being and mental health with a number of celebrity guests, including Lady Gaga, Glenn Close, DeMar DeRozan and Langston Galloway. The series featured five episodes, which were each an hour long.

The show also featured Winfrey and Harry opening up about their own experiences with mental illness. Focusing on making sure viewers know they are not alone in the struggle that sometimes happens with mental health, the show’s goal is to challenge stigmas and provide insight into how viewers can start the path to treatment.

It’s not surprising that Meghan and Harry have committed themselves to spread awareness about mental health, as they were both very honest about their personal hardships during their 2021 interview with Winfrey.

In an episode of “The Me You Can’t See,” Harry touched more on the racism his wife has faced and how similar it was to what his late mother and her Egyptian boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed experienced in the 1990s. He said that “history was repeating itself,” as per The Independent.

However, many people were unaware of all of this prior to Harry and Meghan’s interview with Winfrey.

Speaking with Gayle King in a September 2022 CBS interview, Winfrey spoke more about the “bombshell” interview she did with Harry and Meghan. “I was as surprised by the bombshell as everybody else,” Winfrey explained. “I was doing an interview to offer them a platform to tell their story about why they left, and that was my number one intention was just clarity on ‘Why did you leave?’”

She added, “And so some of the things that were revealed in that interview came as a surprise to me and those surprises are now referred to as a ‘bombshell.’” Winfrey also said that she just wanted to give Meghan and Harry a platform to share their side of the story.

“But I didn’t set out to do a ‘bombshell’ interview,” she said. “I set out to do an interview, have a conversation that would allow them to tell their story.” However, Winfrey admitted that she tries to “stay out of people’s family business” when possible.
