Ed Harris, who portrays the role of Rear Admiral Chester “Hammer” Cain, confronts Maverick about it, and the conversation between the two might hint at the storyline for the third part!

“These planes that you have been testing, Captain. One day, sooner than later, they won’t need pilots at all. Pilots that need to sleep. Pilots that disobey orders. The future is coming and you’re not in it.”

These lines, said by Ed Harris’ characters, talk about a future with remote fighter jets without the need of a human being. With the changing world, it seems that Top Gun 3 will likely have a storyline where Tom Cruise would have to fully retire until people realize that AI bots can only go so far and that the human touch is what was needed after all.
