One of Steven Spielberg’s most acclaimed films, Saving Private Ryan, received a whopping 11 Oscar nominations. Check out what the cast has been up to since the film’s release in 1998
What do you get when you mix Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Vin Diesel, Ed Burns, Steven Spielberg and the drama of World War II? The movie Saving Private Ryan, which premiered 25 years ago on July 24, 1998, and earned heaps of praise and award nominations.
Here, as the film celebrates its big milestone, catch up with the starry cast, then and now.
Tom Hanks as Captain Miller
Before starring as Captain John H. Miller in Saving Private Ryan, Tom Hanks had already been nominated for three Oscars, taking home two statuettes for Best Actor in Philadelphia (1993) and Forrest Gump (1995). His work as the English teacher turned leader in Saving Private Ryan scored him a Golden Globe and Oscar nomination in 1999 for Best Actor.
Following the film’s release, Hanks earned two more Oscar nominations for his roles in 2000’s Cast Away and 2019’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. He has also won seven Emmys and five Golden Globes, including the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award in 2020.
After making his Broadway debut in Nora Ephron’s Lucky Guy, Hanks received a Tony Award nomination in 2013 for his performance. He was a Kennedy Center honoree in 2014 and received a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. The decorated actor even published the book Uncommon Type in 2017, inspired by his love of typewriters.
Hanks went on to work with Saving Private Ryan director Steven Spielberg four more times in the box office hits Catch Me If You Can (2002), The Terminal (2004), Bridge of Spies (2015) and The Post (2017) alongside Meryl Streep.
In addition to the Toy Story movie franchise, the star’s other notable film credits include The Green Mile (1999), The Polar Express (2004), The Da Vinci Code (2005), Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), Angels & Demons (2009), Larry Crowne (2011), Captain Philips (2013), Sully (2016), Greyhound (2020), Elvis (2022), Pinocchio (2022) and A Man Called Otto (2022).
Hanks has been married to actress Rita Wilson since 1988, whom he first met on ABC’s Bosom Buddies in 1981. Their blended family includes four adult children — Colin, Elizabeth, Chet and Truman.
Matt Damon as Private Ryan
Matt Damon, who played the titular Private (James) Ryan, already had two Oscar nominations and one win from 1997’s Good Will Hunting before taking on this pivotal role.
Damon got his start in Hollywood with a small role in 1988’s Mystic Pizza. He later starred in The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), The Brothers Grimm (2005), The Departed (2006), The Good Shepherd (2006), True Grit (2010), The Adjustment Bureau (2011), Behind the Candelabra (2013), Elysium (2013), Interstellar (2014), Downsizing (2017), Stillwater (2021) and AIR (2023). The actor is also well known for his leading roles as Linus Caldwell in the Ocean’s trilogy and Jason Bourne in the Bourne franchise.
He received two additional Oscar nominations for 2009’s Invictus and 2015’s The Martian. The beloved star has also earned seven Emmy nominations for various projects, including his Project Greenlight filmmaking reality series. Damon — like his best friend and collaborator Ben Affleck — is also a producer, which led to him receiving a Best Picture Oscar nomination for 2016’s Manchester by the Sea, starring Ben’s brother, Casey.
Damon and Luciana Barroso tied the knot in December 2005. The longtime couple share four daughters, including Barroso’s daughter, Alexia, from a previous relationship.
Vin Diesel as Private Caparzo
Vin Diesel began acting at age 7 but didn’t make his big film debut until Spielberg saw some of his less recognized work and decided to cast him as Private Caparzo in Saving Private Ryan, the Army Ranger who attempts to rescue a young French girl. Diesel then starred in the hit 2000 sci-fi movie Pitch Black.
Since Saving Private Ryan, two of Diesel’s most famous roles are playing Dominic Toretto in The Fast and the Furious franchise and voicing Groot in Marvel series like Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers and 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder.
Other notable movie credits include xXx (2002), A Man Apart (2003), The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), The Pacifier (2005), xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017) and Bloodshot (2020).
Diesel has three children with girlfriend and model Paloma Jimenez — son Vincent Sinclair and daughters Hania Riley and Pauline.
Tom Sizemore as Sergeant Horvath
Tom Sizemore had several major roles throughout the ’90s.
Following his turn as Tech Sergeant Michael “Mike” Horvath and Captain Miller’s trusted friend in Saving Private Ryan, Sizemore was featured in the 2001 blockbusters Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down. He later starred in many low-budget and independent films before landing recurring roles on Hawaii Five-0, The Red Road and the Twin Peaks Showtime revival.
Throughout his career, the actor struggled with drug addiction and several scandals. Sizemore died on March 3, 2023, after suffering a brain aneurysm the previous month. He was 61 years old. Filmed before his death, Sizemore will be featured on the season 6 premiere of Netflix’s Cobra Kai in 2023.
Sizemore is survived by twin sons, Jagger and Jayden, who he shared with ex Janelle McIntire.
Edward Burns as Private Reiben
In the lead-up to Saving Private Ryan, Edward Burns was already a successful filmmaker and actor.
After the success of his performance as Private First Class Richard Reiben — the defiant Brooklyn native who openly questions the mission — Burns starred in The Holiday (2006), 27 Dresses (2008), Man on a Ledge (2012) and Alex Cross (2012).
He’s also appeared on Will & Grace, Entourage, Mob City, Public Morals and Bridge and Tunnel. Burns continues to write, direct and star in his own projects, including 2018’s Summer Days, Summer Nights and 2019’s Beneath the Blue Suburban Skies.
Burns married supermodel Christy Turlington in 2003. They share two children, Finn and Grace.
Barry Pepper as Private Jackson
Barry Pepper played left-handed sniper Daniel Jackson in Saving Private Ryan.
After the prolific actor reunited with former costar Hanks in the Oscar-nominated film The Green Mile, he later appeared in We Were Soldiers (2002), 25th Hour (2002), Flags of Our Fathers (2006), Seven Pounds (2008), True Grit (2010), Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015), Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018), Crawl (2019), Running with the Devil (2019) and Creed III (2023), where he voices a narrator during a televised fight.
In 2001, Pepper received an Emmy nomination for portraying baseball legend Roger Maris in 61*. His performance as Robert F. Kennedy on The Kennedys earned him his first-ever Emmy win in 2011.
Pepper has been married to wife Cindy since 1997, and the couple shares one daughter, Annaliese.
Giovanni Ribisi as T-4 Medic Wade
As a child actor, Giovanni Ribisi had already appeared in an impressive number of films — including opposite Hanks in 1996’s That Thing You Do! — before portraying the quiet combat medic Irwin Wade.
Ribisi continued racking up film credits, starring in Gone in 60 Seconds (2000), The Gift (2000), Lost in Translation (2003), Cold Mountain (2003), Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004), Public Enemies (2009), Avatar (2009), The Rum Diary (2011), Ted (2012), Selma (2014), Ted 2 (2015) and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022).
The actor guest starred on several episodes of Friends as Phoebe Buffay’s brother, Frank. Ribisi also had recurring roles on Dads, Sneaky Pete, On the Verge and The Offer. In 2007, he received an Emmy nomination for outstanding guest actor for My Name is Earl.
Ribisi has three children. He shares twins with partner Emily Ward. Ribisi’s eldest daughter, Lucia, is from his first marriage to former actress and interior designer Mariah O’Brien.
Adam Goldberg as Private Mellish
Before playing Stanley “Fish” Mellish in Saving Private Ryan, Adam Goldberg was most known for his memorable three-episode role as Chandler’s crazy roommate Eddie on Friends.
Goldberg has appeared in several films since Spielberg’s war epic, including A Beautiful Mind (2001), How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), Deja Vu (2006), Zodiac (2007) and Running with the Devil (2019). Since 2021, he has starred on the CBS revival The Equalizer alongside Queen Latifah. His other TV credits include The Street, Joey, Entourage, The Unusuals, NYC 22, Fargo, The Jim Gaffigan Show, Taken and God Friended Me.
Goldberg is also a photographer and musician. In 2009, he released an album, Eros and Omissions, a collaboration with Flaming Lips drummer Steven Drozd. Goldberg and Drozd previously composed the music for the 2003 film I Love Your Work, featuring his former costar Ribisi and ex-girlfriend Christina Ricci.
Goldberg married artist and designer Roxanne Daner in 2014, with whom he has had three children. The couple’s first son, Bix, was born stillborn in 2012, as the actor revealed on WTF Podcast With Marc Maron in December 2014. Goldberg and Daner welcomed their second son, Bud, in 2014 and a third son, Sonny, in 2018.
Jeremy Davies as Corporal Upham
It took a decade after the release of Saving Private Ryan for Jeremy Davies, who played the unit’s inexperienced interpreter, to find a major role.
However, he later found success as physicist Daniel Faraday on ABC’s Lost and the revered Dickie Bennett on FX’s Justified, for which he won an Emmy in 2012 for outstanding guest actor on a drama series.
Davies’ film credits include Secretary (2002), Solaris (2002), The Black Phone (2021) and Bitcon (2022), as well as many independent films. He also appeared on series like Texas Rising and Sleepy Hollow.
