Travis Kelce is heading into a season in which he might be called on to do something we aren’t used to seeing him do.
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end signed a massive new deal with the Super Bowl champions in the offseason and is set to start the campaign in a healthier state than he did the last one. Chiefs fans will be hoping he has a period unlike last term as, despite his effectiveness, he struggled with injury throughout and was doubtful for several games.
The AFC side will start the 2024 NFL season at home against the Baltimore Ravens and will hope to hit the ground running. Kelce is among some of the top stars returning to the team, having committed his future following rife retirement rumors.
Travis Kelce Set For A Strange New Role With The Chiefs
Travis Kelce will obviously be quarterback Patrick Mahomes’s premier receiving option, but he has also landed a new gig, though he might never get to actually function in it.
According to the Chiefs special teams coordinator, Dave Toub, the star TE will be the team’s backup long snapper in 2024.
“See, Kelce’s our backup long snapper,” Toub revealed this week, per Chiefs Wire. “During the regular season, I can throw him in there and he’s dynamite, does a great job.”
The concept isn’t all that foreign to Kansas City. Reserve tight end Noah Gray filled in for starter James Winchester following a minor preseason injury.
Kelce didn’t get to step in for Winchester because he was not in the starting lineup, but he will likely get the nod should the primary snapper find himself sidelined during the regular season.
