Gerwig professed her love for the children’s classics, but the weight and popularity of it puts a certain pressure on her to give it justice and become as good, if not better, as the original movies. Such responsibility rests on her shoulders.

Greta Gerwig Admits True Feelings On Helming The Chronicles of Narnia

During her talk at BBC Radio 4’s Today via Deadline, director Greta Gerwig revealed her greatest fear in terms of helming the upcoming The Chronicles of Narnia projects. As a huge fan of the story, she regards it as something that should be done in the most proper way.

“I’m slightly in the place of terror because I really do have such reverence for Narnia. I loved Narnia so much as a child. As an adult, C.S. Lewis is a thinker and a writer. I’m intimidated by doing this. It’s something that feels like a worthy thing to be intimidated by.”
Gerwig also feared that as an American, she might not give the movies the touch of British that they require. She likened it to staging and producing a Shakespearean play where the cast and crew are all Americans.

“As a non-British person, I feel a particular sense of wanting to do it correctly… it’s like when Americans do Shakespeare, there’s a slight feeling of reverence and as if maybe we should treat it with extra care. It is not our countryman.”

Even with all the successful projects she has done, especially the massive victory of Barbie at the box office, Gerwig still cannot believe she gets to work on another iconic franchise. She told Total Film:

“I haven’t even really started wrapping my arms around it. But I’m properly scared of it, which feels like a good place to start. I think when I’m scared, it’s always a good sign. Maybe when I stop being scared, it’ll be like, ‘Okay. Maybe I shouldn’t do that one.’ No, I’m terrified of it. It’s extraordinary.”

There is so much to look forward to in Gerwig’s version of The Chronicles of Narnia. So far, there have been three film installments: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

With the news of her upcoming work on the revival of The Chronicles of Narnia, Greta Gerwig has no plan to stop creating more films. In the same interview with Total Film, she explained:

“I hope to make all different kinds of movies in the course of the time I get to make movies, which – it’s a long time, but it’s also limited. I want to do big things and small things and everywhere in between, and having another big canvas is exciting and also daunting.”
Gerwig has emerged as one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood, proving that her talent and experience as a writer and actress have come in handy.
