Jo Koy welcomes more criticism as Ricky Gervais won Golden Globe for Armageddon despite a massive controversy.

Recently, Jo Koy has been subjected to countless headlines after his act at the Golden Globes 2024 went wrong. The hosting gig attracted criticism for flat and offensive jokes about Barbie and Taylor Swift, which did not land anywhere. Now, the comedian has taken to a series of interviews to apologize for the event and discuss the hosting debacle. However, the fans still don’t appear to be satisfied.

This year’s Golden Globes was not only infamous for Jo Koy’s hosting. It also attracted eyeballs for presenting the Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television award to Ricky Gervais. Gervais has delivered one of the most controversial acts in his Armageddon special, which received intense backlash from several audiences. Koy’s nightmares intensified as the fans pointed out how Ricky Gervais won despite being so offensive, while Koy got grilled by the fans.
How is Jo Koy handling the situation right now?

Jo Koy is having one of the most challenging moments while trying to handle the situation. While his Barbie joke led to several fans accusing him of s*xism, the jab at Taylor Swift brought him under the direct radar of the Swifties. Soon after the event, the 52-year-old talked to GMA3 (via Deadline), addressing the issues and apologizing for “falling a little short” at the event.
The Golden Globes host has repeatedly admitted that hosting was a tough job for him, and he did not get ample time for writing and preparation. But despite everything, he admitted to having a fun experience at the event. However, it does not look like the audience would let him go smoothly.
After the GMA3 episode, Jo Koy tried to clarify himself once again while talking to the Los Angeles Times. The Chelsea Lately panelist, who was criticized for accusing his writing team during the event, addressed that it was a “rookie move” on his part-
“Those writers are dope and that was not my intention at all. They were amazing, they had my back and I need to make sure I fix that and I will, I always will.”
However, the host stuck to the point that he was hired just 10 days before the ceremony, and they did not have more than a day to write the monologue. Jo Koy stirred up social media once again as he expressed his disappointment with the responses to his Barbie joke. Koy stated- “I’m telling a joke — what happened to society where we can’t even joke with each other anymore.”

The fans were shocked when Jo Koy thought he was being funny by calling Barbie “a plastic doll with big b**bies”. Even though Greta Gerwig proved herself to be the greater human by letting go of the joke, the fans did not. Despite the Leo actor’s repeated attempts to clarify himself, he tried to criticize the audience for not taking a joke as it was-
“The things that are being said, it’s just like, man, I don’t think you understand who I am as a person, you know what I mean?”
On the other side, the fans are also pointing out how Koy is repeatedly victimizing himself. Last year, comedian Ricky Gervais also raised an intense controversy with his Armageddon comedy special. There was a joke regarding terminally ill children in that Netflix special, which angered several fans. However, despite all that, Gervais won the Golden Globe for Best Stand-up this year.
Fans have observed how Jo Koy is out there in trouble while Gervais won a Golden Globe even after such a controversy. Take a look at some of the reactions by the fans:
It can be undoubtedly said that the matter will take some time to settle down. While a large section of the audience has bashed the host, a handful of celebrities like Whoopi Goldberg and Steve Martin also came forward to support him. They agreed that it is indeed a difficult job and Koy does not deserve so much trolling for that.
