Grok is the first piece of tech to come out of xAI, which launched in July. Still in its early beta phase, the bot is only available to select users at the moment. Musk noted on X that the current plan is for Grok to eventually become a feature of X Premium+, the paid subscription tier for X (formerly Twitter) that costs $16 a month.

In true Elon Musk style, Grok does not come across as your ordinary large language model chatbot. Formulated with “a bit of wit” and “a rebellious streak,” the bot was modeled on “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and is designed to answer the “spicy questions” that other AIs won’t. Musk posted an example on X of the bot’s response to a request for a cocaine recipe that was full of sarcasm and jokes.
