Lead actors of the Harry Potter franchise Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint worked with each other for over ten years, spanning their entire childhoods. The actors have grown quite comfortable with each other after spending a decade every day on set and have recalled many instances where co-stars have pranked each other during production.

Actor Daniel Radcliffe once revealed in an interview that his co-star Emma Watson played a prank on the actor that almost resulted in tears.

Anyone who has watched the Harry Potter series would agree that actress Emma Watson perfectly embodied the ever-studious and rule-following Hermoine Granger. Watson was so apt for her character that she was reported to have even memorized her co-stars’ lines and could be seen mouthing them under her breath while filming.

However, despite her reputation as the picture-perfect student, her co-star revealed that she had a mischievous side to her as well. In a 2014 interview with Express, Radcliffe mentioned that when he was fourteen, Watson woke him up early in the morning to tell him that his favorite band The Libertines had broken up. Radcliffe described the prank,

“Emma Watson, when I was like 14, told me that one of my favorite bands had broken up. It was like, really early in the morning so I hadn’t even got that it was April 1st yet… I was a fan of this band called the Libertines, who were very fractious and they might have broken up at any point, and she came in and went, ‘It’s happened, it’s finally happened!’”

The garage rock band was known for their extreme internal conflicts, with prospects of a breakup being a reality at any time. Hence, Radcliffe believed it and allegedly started breaking down immediately. This concerned Emma Watson so much that she immediately dialed back on her prank and revealed the truth to him.

But she just had to immediately say, ‘No, no, no, it’s a joke, it’s April Fool’s’, because I didn’t cry, but my face was like, ashen… My lip quivered, definitely!”

Daniel Radcliffe seems to have gotten back at Emma Watson for this joke multiple times as he reportedly ruined the take of Hermoine and Ron’s kiss in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II, when the actor invited himself over while filming the scene.

Alan Rickman And Michael Gambon Played A Prank On Daniel Radcliffe

Along with headlining the fantasy franchise as the boy who loved, Daniel Radcliffe seemed to also be the primary target for all pranks on set. By his account, Emma Watson played a practical joke on him when he was fourteen, which puts it during the filming of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Many actors have managed to create mischief on the sets of the Alfonso Cuarón directorial, with a particularly hilarious one devised by the late actor Alan Rickman and Dumbledore actor Michael Gambon.

Revealed on the behind-the-scenes featurette of the film (via YouTube), Daniel Radcliffe mentioned that the prank involved the scene where all the children are sleeping in the Great Hall at Hogwarts since Sirius Black is rumored to be at large within the school. The prank was reportedly orchestrated by Rickman, Alfonso Cuarón, and Gambon. Radcliffe spoke about it,

“There was this one time where, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, and I think Alfonso was kind of coordinating the opportunity to play a practical joke on me…We just finished a take and it had taken ages to get it and they had put a fart machine in my sleeping bag. And Michael Gambon had been pressing it during the take I found out.”

According to Alfonso Cuarón, Daniel Radcliffe had asked to be placed next to a ‘girl he fancied’ during the scene, which prompted the actors to pull the prank on him. Radcliffe admitted on a Reddit AMA that it was the best prank that was pulled on set.
