As per reports, Matt Damon broke up with his ex-girlfriend in the worst possible way by announcing it on The Oprah Winfrey Show when his ex-girlfriend herself didn’t know about it in the first place. The Good Will Hunting actor, however, insists that she knew about it before his confession on the show.

This goes back to 1997 when Matt Damon first starred opposite Minnie Driver in the movie he and Ben Affleck wrote together, Good Will Hunting. After playing each other’s love interests on-screen, the duo fell in love off-screen as well, with Damon admitting that Driver ‘pretty much rocked my world’ on the Late Show with David Letterman. 

However, the An Ideal Husband actress’s family had their doubts regarding how badly their whirlwind romance might end. Revealing the same, Minnie Driver said,
“My family loved Matt … They could see that this young man was rocketing really fast and so was I. And when you’re young, it’s pretty hard to keep your head on straight and to maintain a grounded sense of deportment. They were like, ‘This may well end badly for reasons that are to do with all these things coming together in a perfect storm.’”

A month after appearing on David Letterman‘s show, Matt Damon was seen on The Oprah Winfrey Show. It was there that he confessed about his breakup with ex-girlfriend Driver, saying,
“Well, I’m single. I was with Minnie for a while, but we’re not really romantically involved anymore. We’re just really good friends, and I love her dearly … I care about her a lot. We care about each other a lot. It wasn’t meant to be, you know? And if it’s not meant to be, then it’s not meant to be.”

But after watching his confession on TV, Minnie Driver claimed that the world got to know about their breakup before her and that Damon hadn’t discussed this with her before announcing it on the big screen. In an interview after her beau’s confession, Driver said,

“It’s unfortunate that Matt went on Oprah; it seemed like a good forum for him to announce to the world that we were no longer together, which I found fantastically inappropriate. Of course, he was busy declaring his love for me on David Letterman a month previously.”

Matt Damon on the other hand, insists that his ex-girlfriend knew about their split before he broke the news out on TV. While the rumors still remain unclear about who knew what and who didn’t, the pair went ahead to date other high-profile celebrities, with Damon tying the knot with Luciano Barrosso in 2005 and still going strong with 3 kids, and Driver recently getting into a relationship with filmmaker Addison O’Dea in 2019.
