TESLA boss Elon Musk has confirmed his cars will soon park themselves.

The tech billionaire posted on his social media platform, X, that Tesla cars will be capable of identifying and parking in open spots.

“We are working on a feature where the car identifies probable viable parking spaces,” Musk posted.

“You tap on one, exit the vehicle and it parks there.”

Tesla is the leading company in developing autonomous systems in automobiles, and already have multiple features in their cars.

All of Musk’s cars currently have a parking assist feature which detects nearby objects while driving below five miles per hour or in reverse.

Tesla’s autopilot also has an autopark feature which allows the car to maneuver into both parallel and perpendicular parking spaces.

The cars can park at speeds below 13 mph and 8 mph respectively.

While this development may seem like a breakthrough in autonomous parking technology, some companies already have versions of it.

Hyundai developed an upgrade to their parking system which allows a car to study its parking environment and drive into the selected parking spot.

The system uses ultrasonic sensors and surround view monitors to scan its environment and smoothly navigate into a spot.

The technology also memorizes locations that it parks in, and can store 100 meters of a route in its database to park in again.

Mercedes has created a version of this technology as well for their 2024 E-Class.

Their autonomous parking tech allows the driver to pilot it using their phone to get in and out of tight spaces.

These developments are massive steps in the continuous progress towards fully autonomous vehicles.

It will be a tight race to see which automaker takes the leap to a fully self-driving car first.
