It is truly Black Monday in the NFL.

After a disappointing 6-11 season that saw them struggle badly offensively and get off to a slow start defensively, the New York Giants expected to bring back coordinators Mike Kafka and Wink Martindale.

Something certainly changed on Monday.

New York Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale said last week that “the future is bright if you’re asking me how I look at my future.”

That future will be bright elsewhere after he suddenly resigned from his position.

In another move, the team fired special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey on Monday after six seasons with the team. The Giants under McGaughey ranked 22nd in special teams efficiency this season.

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll also announced offensive line coach Bobby Johnson was dismissed. Outside linebackers coach Drew Wilkins and his brother Kevin, a defensive assistant, have also been relieved of their duties.

With Martindale’s top two assistants having been dismissed, he clearly saw his time with the team coming to an end.

The Giants went 6-11 after a strong 9-7-1 season in 2022 that saw the franchise reach the postseason for the first time since 2016.

The offense ranked 29th in the NFL while the defense finished 27th.

Now, after Martindale’s resignation, the Giants will be looking for a new coordinator to lead the defense.
