Gillian Anderson made a bold fashion choice for Sunday night’s Golden Globes, wearing a dress subtly embroidered with vaginas.

The Sex Education star looked stunning in a strapless white custom gown designed by Gabriela Hearst for the ceremony in Beverly Hills.

At first glance, it looked as though the star had chose a classic gown but fans zooming in soon noticed the dress was covered in female anatomy motifs.

Speaking to Deadline on the red carpet, Gillian confirmed the design, shrugging when asked why she chose the gown: ‘Oh for so many reasons. It’s brand appropriate.’

In another red carpet interview with Extra Gillian explained that the dress was a collaboration between Hearst and her ‘alternative wellness brand,’ G Spot.

‘Yonis [the Sanskrit word for womb], there are so many yonis on my dress,’ she said. ‘It took 3 1/2 hours per yoni to embroider, and there are a lot. So it was about 150 hours of embroidering.’

‘Since my Instagram presence has been highlighting yonis since Sex Education landed on Netflix and with the mantra of my brand G-Spot being to “prioritize pleasure,”‘ I wanted to bring this element into the design,’ she added to British Vogue.

Gillian added to the fun by sharing a photo of herself tucking into some dinner after the show, quipping in the Instagram caption: ‘Sometimes you just need a sausage to go with your yoni dress.’

Hearst meanwhile declared the look was ‘vulvaliciously chic’ on her Instagram post as the gave an insight into the epic construction process.

‘Gillian wears an ivory wool silk structure cady corset gown with custom embroidery. Made entirely in New York City, the embroidery was crafted in the garment district and the gown was assembled at the in-house studio. Each motif took approximately 3.5 hours to embroider.’

The dress was met with an outpouring of love by fans online with one tweeting: ‘Gillian Anderson wearing a dress embroidered with vaginas oh she is and will always be the moment.’

‘are those vulvas on gillian anderson’s dress… i love her so much’ declared another.

Another agreed, tweeting: ‘gillian anderson and her yoni dress stole 2024 golden globes event. simply stunning and one of a kind iconic queen.’

Gillian has rebranded as a sexual wellness guru after the success of her hit Netflix show, Sex Education.

The actress, 55, is best known for playing Dana Scully in The X-Files but found a new legion of fans playing sex therapist Jean Milburn in the teen drama.

Last year Gillian furiously defended her pleasure enterprise G-Spot as she encouraged women to ‘let go of shame’ surrounding female desire.

In 2023 the actress launched a soft drinks brand named G-Spot which ‘invigorates and boosts performance’ with natural ingredients, and is also working on a new book based on women’s sexual fantasies.

She revealed the inspiration behind the stress-busting beverages came following a series of restrictive diets in her younger years.

In an October 2023 interview with NET-A-PORTER’s digital title, PORTER Gillian explained how she hopes to make women ‘feel empowered’ through her new projects.

She said: ‘Pleasure is a right. It’s not trivial. It’s not frivolous. We’re trying to encourage women to let go of the shame, the guilt, the negative messaging around it.’

Recalling how her interest in drinks was born, Gillian explained how the brand was a response to the restrictive diets she was made to follow in her twenties and thirties.

When the actress entered her forties, she explained how the diets made her feel like saying: “Don’t f***ing tell me what I should and shouldn’t be consuming; I can do whatever I want.’

Alongside her drinks brand Gillian has also been compiling a new book based entirely on the explicit sexual fantasies of women across the world, set for release in 2024.

Inspired by her role on the popular Netflix series she has been collecting the deepest and most personal erotic thoughts of her female contemporaries.

She continued: ‘There is the book and a couple of other things that I’m not talking about yet, but they’re the same messaging in terms of pleasure and empowerment, and being honest with oneself about what one wants and what feels good.’

Gillian’s character, Jean in Sex education, has an easy attitude towards physical intimacy and ready willingness to discuss intercourse without fear of judgement.

Earlier this year, she explained how the relaxed approach adopted by Milburn in a show doesn’t always apply to real-life, modern day women – and she’s keen to know why.

Writing for The Guardian, Gillian insisted her forthcoming book – to be published by Bloomsbury – will be a cathartic experience for anyone who chooses to get involved.

She wrote: ‘I want women across the world, and all of you who identify intrinsically as women now – queer, heterosexual and bisexual, non-binary, transgender, polyamorous – all of you, old and young, whatever your religion, and married, single or other, to write to me and tell me what you think about when you think about sex.

‘Whether it’s when you’re having it by yourself or with a partner, or with more than one. Tell me. Fantasies, frustrations, explorations, the forbidden, childhood, sounds, fetishes, guilt, insatiability.

‘Fifty years on, the boundaries have been erased, no more so than in our own sexuality: BDSM, the modern meaning of gender etc, anything is up for grabs. Are women still the silent sex?’

Gillian previously revealed how she was constantly gifted sex toys after landing the role of therapist Jean Milburn on Netflix series Sex Education, quipping: ‘I’ve been sent more vibrators than I ever have, which isn’t a bad thing!’
