In its close to 20-year run, The Ellen DeGeneres Show had some rather special interviews, though it certainly had a lot of awkward ones too.

While we have seen many emotional guests on the popular chat show, the awkward moments have certainly been a far from comfortable watch for viewers.

Perhaps one of the more awkward interviews DeGeneres ever conducted on her chat show was with Dakota Johnson back in 2019.

In fact, the exchange has resurfaced in recent days as Monday (27 November) marked the fourth anniversary of the infamous interview.

Back then, Johnson was on The Ellen DeGeneres Show promoting her new film, The Peanut Butter Falcon.

And while there was a bit of talk about the movie, there was one particular segment that had everyone talking at the end.

Talk quickly turned to the fact Johnson had recently turned 30, which led to DeGeneres claiming she was never invited to her birthday party.

But Johnson was seemingly not happy with the response though, as she swiftly responded: “Actually, no, that’s not the truth, Ellen, you were invited.

“No, last time I was on the show, last year, you gave me a bunch of s**t about not inviting you, but I didn’t even know you wanted to be invited.”

“Well, who wouldn’t want to be invited to a party?” DeGeneres quickly prompted back.

“But I didn’t even know you liked me,” Johnson insisted. This led to a rather striking comeback from DeGeneres who insisted she has always liked the actor and wouldn’t have invited her on the show so often if she wasn’t a fan.

“But I did invite you, and you didn’t come,” Johnson insisted.

After a back and forth with her producer, DeGeneres was informed she was out of town that week: “Oh yeah, I had that thing.”

People online have been speaking about the interview in recent days after the recent anniversary, with many flocking to X (formerly known as Twitter) to cringe over the moment all these years later.

“Four years ago today Dakota Johnson ended Ellen’s whole career with ‘actually that’s not the truth Ellen’,” one person penned on the popular social media platform.

A second added: “Dakota really clowned Ellen at her own show.”

While a third remarked: “4 years ago, Dakota Johnson called out Ellen DeGeneres for lying about not being invited to her birthday party.”

Well, this isn’t the first time DeGeneres has faced criticism over her treatment of guests as earlier this year, Emily Ratajkowski slammed the host for quizzing Taylor Swift on her dating history, labeling the exchange as ‘f**ked up’.
