Miley Cyrus Made The Grammys Awkward With A Single Line In Her Acceptance Speech

Miley Cyrus gave some interesting speeches during the 2024 Grammy Awards but it was the end of one that left the audience speechless.

Highlights

Miley Cyrus once wanted to break out of her Disney image and used shock value to prove her adult status.
After years of apologizing for past actions, Miley is now unapologetically herself, complete with controversial remarks.
From childhood photoshoot scandals to award speech mischief, Miley has come into her own not seeking approval.

Miley Cyrus has been surrounded by music since before she was born. Being the daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus and the goddaughter of Dolly Parton, it was nearly inevitable that Miley would be a part of the entertainment industry as well.

In the early days of Miley’s career, she was a Disney star. This squeaky clean image was something that was difficult for Miley to keep up as she got older and could no longer identify with Hanna Montana. Miley even refused to do another Hanna Montana movie when her contract was up, wanting to move on. Later, Miley found herself involved in controversy from her late teens through her twenties.

Just when it appeared that Miley’s controversial days were somewhat behind her, Miley gave two speeches at the 2024 Grammy Awards. The speech for the Best Pop Solo Performance was straightforward enough, albeit with a Miley twist on it that showered the presenter of the award, Mariah Carey, with compliments. Many say the compliments Miley gave may have been fake though.

The speech for Record of the Year started off a bit strange. However, Miley Cyrus made the Grammy Awards awkward with this part of her award speech, and it was not until Miley explained it that the hullabaloo over the statement began to die down.

Miley Cyrus’ Grammy Acceptance Speech For Record Of The Year Ended On An Awkward Note

Miley Cyrus claimed not to be wearing a specific undergarment at the end of her award speech

The 2024 Grammy Awards were a big night for Miley. Not only did she win the Best Pop Solo Performance Grammy, but she also won for Record of the Year for her hit song, “Flowers.” For both wins, Miley gave speeches to thank those who helped her. But Miley’s acceptance speech for Record of the Year ended on an awkward note after a comment Miley made to conclude her speech.

“Thank you all so much. This award is amazing but I really hope that doesn’t change anything because my life was beautiful yesterday. Not everyone in the world will get a Grammy but everyone in this world is spectacular,” Miley said.

“So please don’t think that this is important, even though it’s very important, right, guys? We’re very excited to put this on the piano.”

Miley went on to say, “I want to thank everyone that’s standing on stage right now. Tom, Tyler, Michael, and Greg. Our teams. My team. Crush, Columbia. My Mommy, my sister, my love, my main gays, ’cause look how good I look. Uh, anyone else? Your wife. Your fiance. All the people that we love. Thank you all so much.”

“I don’t think I forgot anyone, but I might have forgotten underwear,” Miley concluded her speech before she said, “Bye.”

Given that Miley is used to being involved in controversy, it was not surprising that her speech was not a traditional one. Nor was it not surprising that Miley did not thank Billy Ray after refusing to talk to him after his getting married.

Miley Cyrus Quit Being Vegan

Miley spent most of her younger years mired in controversy. In comparison to her behavior in the past, the speech was actually mild. This is especially true after it was discovered that Miley was only joking about not having any underwear on.

Miley Cyrus’ Twenties Were Mired In Controversy But For Good Reason

Miley was involved in several controversies as a young artist. From appearing naked in her “Wrecking Ball” music video to her performance with Robin Thicke that many thought was inappropriate from the costume Miley wore to the dance moves she did on stage, it seemed like, regardless of what Miley did, she was looked down on.

What people did not realize, however, was that Miley was participating in the antics that she was because Miley was trying to break out of her typecasting of being a Disney pop star. Miley wanted to be edgier and the only way she saw to do that was through shock value.

“I’m actually not an attention-seeking person, sitting here as a 30-year-old grown woman,” Miley explained in 2023. “I was creating attention for myself because I was dividing myself from a character I had played. Anyone, when you’re 20 or 21, you have more to prove. ‘I’m not my parents. I am who I am.'”

It is this realization that started Miley down the path of no longer caring what people thought of her. Because of this, the apologies that she gave in her twenties were things that she started to take back once entering her thirties.

Miley Cyrus No Longer Apologizes For Her Behavior, Past Or Present

Miley Cyrus is done apologizing for mistakes made as a young person and those as she ages

When Miley was 15 years old, she took part in a photoshoot for the cover of Vanity Fair. The cover showed Miley with a sheet covering the front of her body, leaving her back exposed.

While the famed Annie Leibovitz took the photo, critics did not see the art behind the photo. Instead, they saw an inappropriate picture of Miley on the cover of the magazine, which sent Disney into damage control mode.

“Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines,” a Disney spokesperson explained in 2008.

Miley was also made to issue a statement about the situation that she initially called “really artsy.”

“I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic,’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed,” Miley’s statement read. “I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about.”

Ten years after this apology was made, Miley retracted it.

“I’M NOT SORRY,” Miley sent out in a tweet with a picture of the cover. “F**k YOU.”

Miley also made an apology in 2011 for a leaked video that showed her taking a bong hit of the psychedelic herb salvia.

“I’m not perfect,” Miley said. “I made a mistake … I’m disappointed in myself for disappointing my fans.”

After being asked if Miley really felt it was a mistake, Miley replied, “They’re not Miley Cyrus. They’re not role models. So for me it was a bad decision, because of my fans and because of what I stand for.”

In 2021, Miley posted the infamous video via Instagram. She captioned the video, “Happy 10 year anniversary to the groundbreaking video of a teenager smoking a bong & saying dumb sh*t to their friends.”

These instances, along with the awkward award speech that Miley gave, are things that Miley is not going to feel bad about either any longer, or to begin with. Miley is going to be Miley and if people do not like her behavior, she is not going to lose any sleep over it.
