Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is among the names being considered by the FA for the England vacancy, according to reports.
The Three Lions are without a manager following Gareth Southgate’s resignation. The 52-year-old left the role in the aftermath of England’s Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.
Numerous names have been suggested to replace him at the helm – including Premier League bosses. And it appears that a new contender has come to the forefront: Spurs’ Ange Postecoglou.
According to The Telegraph, the Australian is expected to be among the FA’s top targets. It is suggested that he has been tracked by FA chiefs for years. Technical director John McDermott has kept an eye on Postecoglou’s career since his spell in Australia and is now the man tasked with compiling a shortlist.
The 58-year-old has three years remaining on his contract with Spurs having previously managed Australia, Yokohama F. Marinos and Celtic. He has been asked about taking over from Southgate in the past.
Speaking ahead of a friendly between England and Australia, he replied: “Oh, come on mate. Stranger things have happened, but no. They’ve got a fantastic manager and I’m eight games into a Tottenham career. That’s how I think.”
Postecoglou had a similar assessment towards the end of the season after being linked with the Liverpool job. He said: “I’ve only been here for seven months so I think that is self-explanatory.

“I am at pains to say that we still have a long way to go in terms of the football we want to play, the team we want to be and the squad we want to have. We’ve only had two positive windows, had a decent campaign so far but we have a long way to go.”
Regardless of Postecoglou’s interest, the FA have already set out their criteria. They reportedly want a coach with good man-management skills and someone who can continue the feel good culture that Southgate created within camp.
Speaking after Southgate’s exit, chief executive Mark Bullingham said: “The process for appointing Gareth’s successor is now under way and we aim to have our new manager confirmed as soon as possible. Our UEFA Nations League campaign starts in September, and we have an interim solution in place if it is needed.”
Away from Postecoglou, a number of high-profile bosses have been linked. Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and ex-Liverpool man Jurgen Klopp have been mentioned but moves for either seem highly unlikely at this stage.
