Getafe will continue to benefit financially thanks to their loan move for Mason Greenwood, despite the forward now being a Marseille player.

The Spanish club took Greenwood on loan for the 2023-24 season after Manchester United opted against reintegrating him into their first team. He had been suspended by the Premier League club following an arrest in January 2022, but later saw charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm – all of which he denied – dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Greenwood is now a Marseille player, having completed a permanent £26.6million move. However, Getafe will also make a significant sum thanks to a clause put in place during his loan, it has been claimed.

According to The Times, that reward is twofold. They are due to bring in 20 per cent of the sale, as well as 20 per cent of future earnings United make from the forward – and with the Red Devils including a sell-on clause of their own in the sale to Marseille, that might not be an insignificant sum.

“Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United and joined French club Olympique de Marseille on a permanent transfer,” a United statement read once the exit was completed.

“The 22 year-old English forward, who spent last season on loan at Getafe in Spain, made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for United since making his debut in 2019. We wish Mason all the best in his future career.”

The clause, from which Getafe have benefitted already and may benefit further, points to United’s desperation to find a buyer. His loan move to the Spanish club was only made official right at the end of the summer 2023 transfer window, but his form in La Liga prompted Marseille to bid for the one-cap England international.

Greenwood scored eight goals in La Liga for Getafe and 10 in all competitions, who receive just north of £5m after his Marseille move. He has signed a five-year contract with his new club, taking the number 10 shirt.

A number of fans protested the move, using the #GreenwoodNotWelcome hashtag on social media, while Marseille mayor Benoit Payan condemned the move. However, manager Roberto De Zerbi defended the club’s plans before the signing was made official.

“He’s a champion, an international level player,” De Zerbi said. “I don’t know what happened, I’m not concentrating on private lives. When a player signs for the club, I consider him my child. Even if I can pull his ear in private, I will defend him publicly. My players are like my sons.”
