Argentina players chanted a racist song about France and its players as they celebrated their Copa America win – with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez filming it.

The South Americans claimed a third major tournament in succession as they beat Colombia to retain their Copa America crown. Sandwiched in between that is a World Cup and their squad partied on the team bus after their victory in Miami.

France were the nation they beat in the World Cup final less than two years ago, securing their victory on penalties after a somewhat bad tempered final. Chelsea midfielder Fernandez was filming and broadcasting live on Instagram as the players began chanting a racist and transphobic song, which was first sung by Argentina supporters during the World Cup.

They could be heard singing the first two lines of the song which begins: “On passport, French nationality, listen, spread the word, they play in France, but they are all…”, before someone is heard saying “cut the video”.

The full lyrics to the song are: “Listen, spread the word, they play in France, but they are all from Angola, they are going to run well, they like to sleep with trans people, their mum is Nigerian, their dad is Cameroonian, but on the passport it says: French.”

Argentine fans have also been known to mock Kylian Mbappe and his apparent relationship with transgender model Ines Rau. They sung about how “they f*** transvestites like f***ing Mbappe”. It is unclear whether the Argentine players – including Lionel Messi and Angel di Maria, Mbappe’s former team-mates at Paris Saint-Germain – followed suit with that part of the song after Fernandez stopped recording.

Fernandez, who landed himself a move to Chelsea for more than £100million in January 2023, has several black, French teammates at Stamford Bridge including Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Wesley Fofana, Malo Gusto and Christopher Nkunku.

Argentina’s Football Federation has yet to acknowledge the video of their players singing the chant during the celebrations on the bus.

The South American nation, following their World Cup victory over the French, were accused of excessively mocking Les Bleus when they claimed the trophy in Qatar in 2022. Emi Martinez was the penalty hero and was seen on a bus holding a baby doll with the Frenchman’s face on it.
