Lucy Chekechiwa, 73, claims she hasn’t seen Mercy since her adoption in 2009

THE Heartbroken grandmother of Madonna’s adopted daughter Mercy has pleaded with the superstar to let them see each other.

Lucy Chekechiwa, 73, is ill and has reached out to the Holiday singer amid she fears she will not see her grand-daughter again before it’s too late.

Madonna, 57, adopted Mercy from an orphanage in Malawi in 2009 and, according to Ms Chekechiwa, promised to keep in touch and allow the child to know of her African heritage – but has not stuck to her word.

Ms Chekechiwa told The Mirror: “Madonna has not been in communication with me and I cannot understand why. She brings Mercy to Malawi but not to see me.

“Why won’t she come to see me? The pain is in my heart.”

Mercy was placed in an orphanage after her mother died just over a week after she was born in 2006.

Lucy currently lives in a small settlement in Thondwe, Malawi, 40 miles from the southern capital of Blantyre.

When she was adopted by Madonna, she joined fellow adopted son David, as well as Madonna’s biological children Rocco and Lourdes.

Lourdes, 19, even stepped out last week with a tattoo of Mercy’s name on her upper arm- joining the teens ‘Mom’ and ‘Dad’ tattoos on her fingers.

Ms Chekechiwa said: “I am thankful for Madonna in what she has given Mercy but I did not expect to never see her again or hear nothing.”

She now hopes that her appeal will result in her being reunited once more with her granddaughter before she passes away and says she ‘thinks of her every day’.

It is not the first time the pop superstar has come under scrutiny regarding the adoption of Mercy, being slated for having an alleged fast-track adoption.

However, after appealing to the nation’s Supreme Court, she eventually overturned a judge’s view that she did not fulfil a residency requirement according to Malawian adoption law and was allowed to keep Mercy.

In April this year it was further revealed that Mercy’s blood family want her back with them, and feel they were scammed into agreeing to the adoption.

Representatives told the Mirror: “Mercy has never had her past or her heritage hidden from her and she visits Malawi every year to learn about her roots and to visit friends and family.”

They added: “Inaccurate stories about Mercy’s adoption harm no one more than the child herself”
