Johnny Depp is set to make his directorial return and he’s crediting Al Pacino for it.

Johnny Depp is one of the most recognizable actors, with numerous acting roles and awards under his belt, and he will soon be making his directorial return after a long break.

Johnny Depp will be directing the upcoming biopic Modi, which is just wrapping production.

The versatile actor, who will make his directorial debut with the film based on painter Amedeo Modigliani, told Deadline that his directorial return is all thanks to Al Pacino: “To Al, who requested that I make this film — how could I refuse Pacino? A sincere acknowledgment for generously contributing his talent and dedication to this project.”

Wonka’s release has people reminiscing about Johnny Depp’s signature performance as the character, but Willy Wonka is just one of Depp’s iconic roles.

The Pirates of the Caribbean actor shared about the upcoming project, “Embarking on this cinematic journey as the director of Modi has been an incredibly fulfilling and transformative experience.

I would like to express my profound gratitude to the entire cast, crew, and producers for their unwavering commitment and creativity.”

Depp continued, “Modi is a testament to the collaborative spirit of independent filmmaking, and I am excited to present this unique and compelling story to the world.”

Alongside Pacino, who plays real-life French art collector Maurice Gangnat in the film, Johnny Depp’s Modi stars Riccardo Scamarcio, Antonia Desplat, Stephen Graham, Bruno Gouery, Ryan McParland, Luisa Ranieri, and Sally Phillips. Most of the film was shot in Budapest, Hungary, but Al Pacino’s scenes were captured in the US.

The film will follow Italian painter Amadeo Modigliani over 48 hours, through a series of chaotic events on the streets and bars of Paris, France, in the middle of World War I.

The artist was on the run from the police and wanted to end his career, a decision dismissed by his friends. His life takes a turn when he faces a collector who could change his life.

From serious investigative journalism to lessons in the basics of modern society, documentaries and docuseries on Netflix have it all.

Modi Reunites Johnny Depp and Al Pacino After Critically Acclaimed Film

Modi is Johnny Depp’s first directorial effort in over two decades. The actor made his director and screenwriter debut in 1997 with The Brave, where he starred alongside Marlon Brando.

Depp co-wrote the film with his brother, D.P. Depp. The film was not a success, as most of the reviews were negative.

The Brave has a 33% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and the negative reception led Depp to the decision not to give The Brave a formal release.

Since The Brave, Depp has directed music videos, some for his ex-partner, Vanessa Paradis, and Babybird.

The same year as his directorial debut, Depp also starred in Mike Newell’s film Donnie Brasco, alongside Al Pacino.

The film received critical acclaim, and the two went on to reunite in Depp’s upcoming film, Modi.

As an actor, Johnny Depp doesn’t have any upcoming projects, and his latest film was the animation Johnny Puff: Secret Mission, where Depp loaned his voice again to the titular character.

Disney is developing a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but Depp is not attached to the project following his legal troubles with ex-wife Amber Heard.

There’s also no information on Modi’s release date, but the fact that filming wrapped is encouraging for a late 2024 premiere date.
