Dave Chappelle was spotted having a great time at the Blue Note Jazz Festival in Napa, California, on Friday evening.

The 48-year-old comedian, who also hosted the festival, was joined by his wife Elaine Arte during the event, and he notably joined Snoop Dogg while the rapper performed for his fans.

The performer’s attendance at the event was met with controversy, as several activists previously voiced their concerns regarding his previous material mocking transgender people.

However, the decision to hire Chappelle as the festival’s host was viewed by some as offensive, given his past history with jokes targeting transgender individuals.

TransLife representative Jennifer Rihl gave a statement to SFGate in which she expressed that she disapproved of his selection.

‘To use comedy against us only furthers transphobia, so I don’t find it all that funny,’ she said.

She also made a point of adding that transgender people had historically been ‘continually discriminated against.’

Rihl stated: ‘I think that the trans community is a rather sensitive group, but for good reason.’

TransLife co-founder Orlando O’Shea also commented on how comedy in general had previously been a safe space for marginalized individuals.

He stated: ‘Comedy has been one of the last acceptable landscapes where discrimination is allowed…where do we draw the lines, and what are the consequences of our jokes?’

The comedian’s appearance at the event occurred just a week after his show at Minneapolis’ First Avenue venue was canceled at the last minute.

The venue subsequently apologized to its staff and patrons for booking the actor, whose performance was shut down just hours before it was set to begin.

Chappelle’s show was promptly moved to the Varsity Theater, during which he made several jokes about the situation at hand.

According to the Star Tribune, he referred to monkeypox as a ‘gay disease’ and referred to the event’s protestors as ‘transgender lunatics.’
