Every year when Christmas comes around, one of the most iconic films anyone can watch – especially if you grew up in the 1990s – is Home Alone.

There’s plenty about the mayhem-filled movie that would make your jaw drop, from the brutality of Kevin McCallister’s booby traps for the burglars to how agonising it looked for the eight-year-old to slap aftershave onto his beardless face.

However, one of the most mind-boggling conundrums of the classic is just how Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) and his family are able to live in such an incredible, multi-room mansion of a house.

For decades now, fans of Home Alone have found themselves wondering how much the property would be worth in real life, and whether it’s actually possible to visit it in real life.

It might come as little surprise that 33 years later, the amount that the house is reportedly worth is truly staggering.

Values of properties change over time, so if we first look back at how much the house would have been worth when the movie was released in 1990, you’ll be able to grapple just how much its worth has increased since then.

How much is the Home Alone house worth?

Real estate expert Trey Danna informed Looper that 33 years ago, the house that Kevin lived in with his several siblings and parents would have cost approximately $620,000 (£489,132).

According to the expert, the parents would need an annual income of $175,000 (£138,061) to afford the property.

As for how much it would be worth now, the value has surged to an estimate that comes to almost 371% more.

It’s reported that now, in the year 2023, the value of Kevin’s house would be closer to $2.3million (£1.8m).

Mind-blown!

Can you visit the Home Alone house?

The house featured in Home Alone where the McCallisters live – and accidentally leave Kevin behind in when they go on a family trip to Paris for the holidays – is located in Winnetka, Illinois, around 20 miles from Chicago.

That’s mostly just the exterior of the property that’s in the films, as some of the interiors were actually built on a separate set located close by.

However, an important exception was the red-carpeted staircase seen in the movie, which was in fact in the house.

For years, many fans have travelled to the location of the house in Winnetka to pay it a visit and to take photos.

In 2021, people were granted the opportunity to actually stay in the home, thanks to Airbnb… for a mere $25 (£19) a night.

In true Home Alone fashion, guests were offered Chicago pizza and microwavable Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, just as Kevin likes it.
