Only one month has passed since Drake announced that he intended to take a hiatus from music because of gastrointestinal issues.
Drake released new music on Thursday night, and one of his new songs showed his inner Swiftie. Prior to this, Drake had informed fans that he was taking a hiatus from music following the release of his eighth studio album last month.
The song “Red Button” features a specific mention to Taylor Swift in the lyrics. It was released on Thursday at midnight alongside Drake’s new album, Scary Hours 3.
In his verses, Drake sings, “Taylor Swift the only n***a that I ever rated/ Only one could make me drop the album just a little later/ Rest of y’all, I treat you like you never made it.”
Drake’s and Swift’s constant competition at the top of music charts makes it unsurprising that the 37-year-old rapper made reference to the 33-year-old pop sensation. Her Loss, Drake and 21 Savage’s collaborative album from the previous year, was initially supposed to drop on October 28 and instead land on November 4.
When it was released, it dethroned Swift’s Oct. 21 hit, Midnights, as the number one song on the Billboard Hot 100.
Drake and Swift have a very cordial relationship despite their ongoing rivalry, as shown by a picture the rapper posted on Instagram in April 2022. Drake is seen wrapping his arms around the pop sensation in the picture, which sparked a lot of rumors that the two were getting ready to work together.
The slideshow, which featured many images of the rapper along with one of his 4-year-old son Adonis, had the remark, “They too soft to understand the meaning of hard work,” written by Drake.
A month after Drake’s album For All the Dogs was released, Scary Hours 3 was released. The rapper teased the new EP on Instagram. He teased the third episode of his Scary Hours series when he posted a video with the comment, “Scary Hours 3 Tonight at Midnight.” The first of the prior parts, Scary Hours, was released as an EP in 2018, and the second one followed in 2021.
Drake reflected on the project during the voiceover that followed the announcement. “I’ll say this to you: I feel no need to appease anybody,” he replies. “I’m quite confident in the body of work I recently released. I am aware that I may be missing for anything from six months to two years, even though I’m not really fond of going missing for extended periods of time in order to maintain mystery.
“But, you know, ultimately, it’s coming to me in a way that I haven’t experienced maybe since, like, If You’re Reading This, where I feel like I’m on drugs,” he said. “It feels like I’m just existing in that frame of mind. In the previous five days, I performed those tunes.
On the night For All the Dogs came out, I didn’t have a single bar written down for any of those songs. It’s not as though I’m taking up where someone left off. You know, this is simply naturally occurring. Who am I to oppose it, then?
Additionally, on Friday, Drake revealed the addition of ten extra dates to his It’s All A Blur Tour – Big As The What? tour with J. Cole in 2024.
The rapper extended the tour to 32 cities by adding more performances in Oklahoma City, Tampa, St. Louis, Buffalo, Kansas City, and San Antonio. The tour concludes on Wednesday, March 27, in Birmingham at BJCC’s own Legacy Arena. It begins on Thursday, Jan. 18, with back-to-back performances in Denver’s Ball Arena.
