LSU star who mysteriously left and called out Kim Mulkey will now miss entire 2024 season
The five-star recruit had left the team this offseason before joining Houston after calling out her former LSU head Kim Mulkey before leaving the team in 2023, with her now suffering a season-ending injury
Former LSU point guard Kateri Poole is set to miss the entire 2024/25 season after suffering a season-ending leg injury in preparation for the year.
Poole had controversially walked away from the team last season after stating that Mulkey had accused her of sending scouting reports to rival teams. “She said that I sent a scouting report to another school. I ain’t do that,” she said.
The point guard added that Mulkey notified her that she would not longer be with the team, before entering the transfer portal and completing a move to Houston this past May
Poole had been a starter with LSU’s 2023 NCAA National Championship team, scoring six points to the 103-85 victory over Caitlin Clark’s Iowa, before seeing her minutes decrease dramatically the following season.
Poole had been looking for a new start with Houston after spending two years with LSU – where she transferred from after spending her freshman year at Ohio State. Her upcoming year with Houston had been set to be her fifth and final season of college basketball eligibility. However, due to her injury, she’ll hope to apply for a further year or eligibility to play for Houston with her set to miss the entire season.
A statement from her Houston head coach Ronald Hughey, confirmed the news. He said: “We are devastated for Kateri. It’s a huge loss because Kateri has worked so hard, and we were looking forward to having Kateri on the court this season. We will be there to support Kateri every step of the way during the recovery process. We know Kateri will be back stronger than ever next season.”
According to ESPN, Poole had been a five-star recruit and the No. 7 ranked point guard in the class of 2020 – with an incredible scouting grade of 97/100. She had received scholarship offers from some of the nations biggest and most prestigious schools, including Kentucky, Louisville, Rutgers, and West Virginia before she opted to join the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Poole earned New York all-state honors four times before kicking off her college career in high school – where she was seen as the most promising player to come out of the state in years. While Poole could look for another year of eligibility, she will also have the opportunity to enter the WNBA Draft. In the pro’s, she could reunite with Angel Reese – who had an incredible rookie season with the Chicago Sky.
