The WNBA is expanding, and the Golden State Valkyries are set to join the league as its 13th franchise in 2025. Toronto and Portland will follow in 2026 as the 14th and 15th teams, although their official names have yet to be determined.

There’s also talk of adding a 16th team, with potential cities like Austin, Charlotte, Miami, Houston, Cleveland, Denver, Milwaukee, and St. Louis in the mix.

For St. Louis, Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum is reportedly hoping to bring a WNBA franchise there. Tatum was born and raised in the city and spent his entire childhood there before leaving to play college basketball for the Duke Blue Devils.

On Tuesday, Connecticut Sun star DiJonai Carrington joined the expansion discussion, replying to a post on X to share which city she’d like Tatum to support in his bid to grow the WNBA.

Carrington, from San Diego, California, suggested the city in which Tatum plays now, Boston.

“What about a bid to move a team to Boston?? 🙂,” the 5-foot-11 guard wrote.

Boston is not only an NBA city but a sports city. Across the four major sports, the Celtics, New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins have combined for 39 championships. In fact, the Celtics just won the most recent one in June.

Additionally, Boston is one of the largest cities in the United States, with a population exceeding 650,000.

Carrington just wrapped up her fourth season in the WNBA. In 2024, the former second-round pick out of Baylor averaged 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.

She also won the Kia Most Improved Player award and was named to the WNBA All-Defensive First Team.
