A second creepy exchange emerges from Caitlin Clark press conference — and it involves her new coach
New video has surfaced of Indianapolis Star columnist Gregg Doyel being awkward in a second exchange during Caitlin Clark’s introductory Indiana Fever press conference on Wednesday after he was called out for cringeworthy comments.
“You were just given the keys to that,” Doyel said to Indiana Fever coach Christie Sides, referring to Clark as “that.”
“What are you going to do with it?”

This second interaction between Doyel and Clark’s coach has sparked further questions about how Doyel covers women in sports, with criticisms coming from all corners of the journalism industry, including Dave Portnoy calling him a “pervert.”
“This was a terrible moment for Gregg Doyel, a journalist I’ve known practically since I first started reporting professionally,” former ESPN columnist Jemele Hill wrote.
Obviously something that never would have been said to a male athlete. I said this some time ago, but another upside of Caitlin Clark’s popularity is that it is going to finally force the sports media to grow up. Sports media has been extremely complicit in marginalizing and infantilizing women’s sports.”
“A lot of the commentary and coverage is now coming from people who have little experience covering female athletes (not sure Doyel fits that category) — which is probably frustrating to the people who have been covering them for years.”
Doyel’s comments toward Clark were met with outrage when he said he wanted Clark to send him heart signs with her hands and if she did they would get along “just fine.”
Doyel apologized for his comments toward Clark and admitted that he “crossed” the line.
CBC contributor Shireen Ahmed posted on X that Doyel’s credentials should be revoked.
‘We are rightly furious and fed up. His creds should be revoked and offered to an unentitled journalist who respects women,” Ahmed wrote.
Doyel, a father of two, was named in the top 250 most influential people in Indiana by the Indianapolis Business Journal in 2023.
Clark will soon have a spot on that list as she instantly becomes one of the biggest stars in the WNBA — and in the state.
