What Cristiano Ronaldo did after scoring his penalty in shootout sums up his elite mentality

Cristiano Ronaldo redeemed himself following his penalty miss in extra-time.

Portugal beat Slovenia in a dramatic penalty shootout to book their spot in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.

After a goalless 90 minutes and extra-time, the last-16 tie between Portugal and Slovenia went to penalties – the first of this summer’s tournament.

And Portugal won the shootout 3-0 to reach the next round of the Euros.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who fluffed his lines from the spot in extra-time, converted Portugal’s opening spot-kick before Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes and Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva scored their penalties.

Diogo Costa saved not one but THREE Slovenian penalties in an extraordinary effort.

Ronaldo redeemed himself following his penalty miss in extra-time and he immediately apologised to the Portugal fans after converting his spot-kick in the shootout, summing up his elite mentality.

After slotting his penalty past Jan Oblak, the 39-year-old immediately gestured towards the fans behind the goal, putting his hands up as he acknowledged his error in extra-time.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was reduced to tears after Oblak saved his first penalty of the night, but the superstar forward was all smiles at the final whistle as Portugal progressed to the next round.

Roberto Martinez’s side face Didier Deschamps’ France on Friday for a place in the semi-finals of Euro 2024.
